[Love Mode] An Ordinary Tuesday

When Reiji walks in the door at two in the morning, he finds Naoya wide awake and waiting for him on the sofa.

“Aoe-san!” he greets Reiji happily, removing Gyoku from his lap and practically pouncing across the room at Reiji.

As Naoya pulls his head down for an unusually passionate kiss, Reiji thinks to himself: oh shit.

He creeps out of the bedroom an hour later, glancing over his shoulder every few steps to make sure that Naoya is deep asleep. When he reaches the kitchen, he tears the calendar off the wall with what he refuses to think of as quiet desperation. It takes him a moment to remember the date, which may or may not have something to do with the unusually passionate love-making of the past hour; finally, he recalls that it’s Tuesday.

He locates the date on the page, and finds himself staring at an unhelpfully blank box until the whole calendar crumples up in his fists.

Reiji wakes up at the usual time to make breakfast for Naoya, and as he fries an egg he wonders if it wouldn’t be too much to draw a heart on the omelette with ketchup. The thought horrifies him deeply as soon as it occurs to him, and he’s eyeing the kitchen bench to gauge whether it could withstand the weight of his forehead when Naoya emerges from the bathroom.

“Omu-rice!” Naoya exclaims and gives Reiji a pleased smile, as if he doesn’t have this for breakfast four mornings a week.

Reiji breaks out into a cold sweat. “Hn,” he says, and hopes that he doesn’t actually sound as nervous as he thinks he does.

Naoya eats while Reiji smokes, and he’s almost calm by the time Naoya dabs at the corners of his mouth with a napkin. “Thank you for the meal,” Naoya beams, then glances around in innocent confusion. “What happened to the calendar?”

“Time for school,” Reiji says.

He flips open his phone and presses speed-dial number two.

“Hrm?” Kashima mumbles after five rings.

“Kashima, what day is today?” Reiji demands, wedging the phone between his ear and his shoulder while he lights his third cigarette of the morning.

“Owner? Why are you up so early?” Kashima asks with a loud yawn.

“Never mind that,” Reiji snaps. “The day. What day is it?”

A pause. Then, “Tuesday?” Kashima suggests tentatively.

Reiji is putting on his shoes in the entryway when Naoya opens the front door and walks in. “I’m home-- Aoe-san!” he says, his face lighting up at the sight of Reiji, then drooping just as dramatically at the sight of Reiji’s clothes. “You’re not going to work, are you?” he asks.

“I’m... not?” Reiji asks back, staring down at Naoya’s disappointed face. “I’m not,” he amends quickly. “I’m... we’re going out for dinner. Go get changed.”

“Oh. Okay!” Naoya says with a bright smile, then skips off to the bedroom.

Reiji pulls out his phone and presses speed-dial number two.

Dinner is inevitably followed by amazing sex once they get home. Their fingers fumble with buttons and zippers while they kiss almost frantically, and somewhere in the back of his mind Reiji realises that they still have their shoes on when Naoya drops to his knees a little clumsily and gives what is probably only his third blowjob ever.

Really amazing sex, Reiji thinks to himself as he crawls over Naoya on their bed and reciprocates enthusiastically.

When the sweat on their body has cooled, Reiji finally gives in and says, “I’m sorry, Naoya, but I have no idea what day it is today.” He feels rather ashamed of himself, which is a new and wholly unpleasant experience.

Instead of getting upset, though, Naoya simply lifts his head from Reiji’s shoulder to give him a puzzled look. “Today? Today is Tuesday, isn’t it?”

Reiji stares at him. Naoya stares back, adorably confused. “Hn,” Reiji says eventually, and nudges Naoya’s head back into its previous position on his shoulder. “Forget it. Let’s just go to sleep.”

“Mm,” Naoya murmurs in agreement, and as he closes his eyes, he reminds himself to call Kiichi-sensei in the morning to say thank you.
